7 Historical African Warrior Cultures

7 Historical African Warrior Cultures
The varied cultures and diverse ethnic groups on the African continent produced many great individuals and groups, including warriors to rival the Spartans.
Howzit  looks at seven of these warrior cultures, from the Ancient Nubians to East Africa's Maasai, whose cultural practices endure despite severe threats to their way of life.
Maasai
The Maasai are primarily concerned with their cattle. Their warrior reputation comes from the Il-murran, a generation of boys between the ages of 12 and 25 who spend their time on walkabouts through the Maasai land protecting the herds. During this time they are not allowed to marry. Once a new generation of Il-murran is phased in these warriors graduate to senior warrior status, where they live among the rest of the tribe and may marry but continue to protect the tribe and the herds.
